HOOVER, Alabama – The Florida baseball team fell to LSU 2-0 in the 2014 Southeastern Conference Tournament Final on Sunday afternoon. The teams were scoreless through seven innings, before a two-run homer provided the games' only runs.
The story in the early part of the game was the pitching for both sides. Florida starter Karsten Whitson pitched 6+ scoreless innings, allowing only 3 hits, and LSU starter Alden Cartwright pitched four scoreless innings for the Tigers.
The stalemate ended in the top of the eighth inning, as LSU's Sean McMullen hit a 2-run homer to right field to get the Tigers on the board first.
LSU's Kurt McCune entered the game in the eighth and pitched a pair of scoreless innings to save the game for the Tigers.
Postgame Quotes
Head coach Kevin O'Sullivan
“It was a great game. It's how a championship game should be. It was close on both sides. I thought both teams played outstanding defense. It just came down to one pitch. I'm really pleased with how we played this week. We lost that first game Wednesday to Kentucky, but we battled back to get to the final game. Tip your hat to LSU. It's good to be done with the SEC schedule, and we can play somebody else. We're looking forward to next week. We'll get back to Gainesville and practice on Tuesday.”
Karsten Whitson, P
“I felt good in the pen (before the game). I had three pitches that were really working for me. I pitched a solid six innings and went out there and executed my game plan.”
