23 Gators Honored by SEC for Academic Excellence
Friday, July 11, 2014 | Lacrosse
Over the last 24 hours, 23 members of the University of Florida's women's lacrosse team were honored for their success in the classroom. Nine rising sophomores were named to the 2013-14 Southeastern Conference (SEC) First-Year Academic Honor Roll, as announced by the league office on Friday. The nine honorees were the most of any Florida athletic team. Overall, 55 Florida student-athletes were named to the list.
“I'm very proud of the young women,” said head coach Amanda O'Leary. “It's great to see nine members of our team honored for their work in the classroom. We stress the importance of balancing academics and athletics, and to see our freshmen's diligence and dedication paying off speaks volumes to the type of student-athlete on our team.”
Additionally, 14 other members of the team were placed on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, as announced by league commissioner Mike Slive on Thursday. Of all Florida teams, the lacrosse team boasted the highest number of student-athletes on the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll.
Recently graduated Cara Canington was one of two Florida seniors who turned in a 4.0 grade point average in the 2013-14 academic year.
The Gators, who begin their first year as an affiliate member of the BIG EAST Conference, are coming of an 18-win season where they captured their fourth-straight American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) regular season title and second tournament title in three years, along with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament that ended in the quarterfinals.
To be recognized to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
