Tuesday, July 8, 2014 | Football
University of Florida offensive lineman Max Garcia was named to the 2014 Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List, announced by the Rimington Trophy committee on Tuesday. He is one of 11 players from the Southeastern Conference included on the watch list for the award that annually honors the nation's top center.
Garcia, a fifth-year senior from Norcross, Ga., started all 12 games in his first season as a Gator last year, playing mostly left guard and left tackle. He will make the transition to center for the upcoming 2014 season. Garcia transferred to UF after beginning his career at Maryland, where he started 12 games at left tackle as a sophomore in 2011.
The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division I FBS. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised more than $2.5 million to help find a cure for cystic fibrosis. The 14-year old award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which has raised over $100 million for CF research. The award is voted on by three prestigious committees – Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and Football Writers Association of America.
The winner will be honored at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theater in Lincoln, Neb., on Jan. 17, 2015.
