
Gators Compete at European and Pan Pacific Championships

The University of Florida had eight current and former swimmers competing this past week at the 2014 European Championships in Berlin, Germany and the Pan Pacific Championships in Gold Coast, Australia. At each event, the athletes were competing for their home country.
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP PARTICIPANTS
Current Gators Mitch D'Arrigo (Italy), Eduardo Solaeche-Gomez (Spain) and Pawel Werner (Poland) and Gator Great Marcin Cieslak (Poland) all competed at the European Championships. D'Arrigo led the UF competitors as he recorded two personal-best times and earned the silver medal in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:46.91.
In addition, Solaeche-Gomez and Cieslak recorded personal-best times and placed fifth (1:59.11) and seventh (2:00.65) in the 200-meter individual medley, respectively. Werner competed in three events at the Championships.
PAN PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP PARTICIPANTS
Gator Greats Ryan Lochte (U.S.), Conor Dwyer (U.S.) and Elizabeth Beisel (U.S.) and current Gator Corey Main (New Zealand) all competed at the Pan Pacific Championships. Beisel led this group as she won a gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley (4:31.99) and a bronze in the 200-meter backstroke (2:08.33).
Dwyer and Lochte each won a title as a member of the 4x200 freestyle relay (7:05.17).
Individually, Lochte recorded his top finish in the 100-meter butterfly as he placed second in a time of 51.67 seconds. Dwyer captured his top mark in the 200-meter freestyle with a fourth place finish (1:46.45).
Main competed in two events throughout the week in Australia. The Auckland, New Zealand native placed seventh in the 200-meter backstroke (1:59.63) and 11th in the 100-meter backstroke (54.70).
COACHES ON DECK
In addition to the Gator swimmers having a great week, associate head coaches Anthony Nesty and Martin Wilby earned some valuable international coaching experience.
Wilby was on deck at the European Championships as a member of the Polish Coaching Staff, while Nesty tutored Venezuelan athletes at the Pan Pacific Championships.
