UF Alum Billy Horschel Wins FedExCup
Monday, September 15, 2014 | Men's Golf
After former Florida golfer Billy Horschel won the TOUR Championship and captured the FedExCup Sunday evening, he turned and serenaded the Atlanta crowd with seven huge Gator chomps.
“Billy hasn't been here for five years, but you can see being a Gator still runs in his blood. That was amazing,” current University of Florida head golf coach JC Deacon said.
Horschel teed off the TOUR Championship by shooting back-to-back rounds of 66, then recorded 69 and 68 in the final two rounds to rise to the top of the leaderboard. His 11-under 269 earned him a three-stroke lead over second-place finishers Jim Furyk and Rory McIlroy.
The win at the TOUR Championship came right on the heels of Horschel's victory at the BMW Championship a week earlier. The back-to-back top finishes helped Horschel accrue 4,750 points to become the FedExCup Champion.
Horschel competed for the Gators from 2005-09. While clad in Orange and Blue, he won the individual title at the SEC Championships, recorded a pair of top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, tied for first place at the NCAA Regionals twice and was named a first-team All-American three times.
While Horschel graduated from the University of Florida in 2009, he has remained an integral part of the program ever since.
“He's still really involved in the program,” first-year head coach Deacon said. “He sends me messages all the time asking how the guys are doing and how we're improving. There's so much pride there, as you could see yesterday. That was incredible. We're really proud of him.”
