
Owens, Sanders Victorious in Birmingham to Cap Off No. 1 Florida's Season Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Bridgette Owens and Shayla Sanders notched event wins in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash, respectively, Saturday afternoon at the Birmingham CrossPlex to cap off No. 1 Florida's season-opener at the UAB Blazer Invitational in winning fashion.
Owens clocked an 8.11 to take the hurdles title following a record-breaking 8.10 prelims mark Friday, while Sanders went 7.45 to win the women's 60-meter dash.
Both Yanick Hart (7.93) and Moriel Pitt (8.09) improved up on their prelim marks in finals to finish second and fifth, respectively, in the men's 60mH.
Florida's men's sprinters Antwan Wright (6.74) and Damien Daniels (6.86) placed second and fourth in finals while representing the Orange and Blue in the 60-meter dash.
NOTABLES
· Following the first weekend of competition for the Orange and Blue (and pending other weekend results), senior Bridgette Owens' 8.10 60mH mark ranks first in the world and NCAA
· Shayla Sanders' 7.44 mark in the 60-meter dash places her sixth in the NCAA
· On the men's side, junior Antwan Wright's 6.68 prelim mark in the 60m ranks him fifth in the event in the NCAA, while Damien Daniels' 6.81 in the race from Friday places him in the collegiate top 15
· Yanick Hart (7.93) and Moriel Pitt (8.09) rank eighth and 15th, respectively, in the country following the conclusion of Florida's competition in Birmingham
· Florida took a contingent of 12 sprinters and hurdlers to the season-opening UAB Invitational
· In Friday's opening action, Owens took down the University of Florida indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles with her 8.10 run, her best performance as a Gator and also a Meet Record at the Birmingham CrossPlex
