GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A pair of Gator freshmen picked up Southeastern Conference weekly gymnastics honors, the league office announced Tuesday. A perfect 10.0 vault mark in her first Stephen C. O'Connell Center appearance Friday gave Gator gymnast Alex McMurtry the season's second SEC Specialist of the Week honor. Gator teammate Kennedy Baker is the SEC Freshman of the Week
| SEC Gymnastics Weekly Honors – Jan. 20, 2015 | |
| SEC Gymnast of the Week: | Amanda Wellick, Arkansas |
|
| Jessie Jordan, LSU |
| SEC Specialist of the Week: | Alex McMurtry, Florida |
| SEC Freshman of the Week: | Kennedy Baker, Florida |
It is the second consecutive week a Gator has been honored, as Bridget Sloan was Week 1 SEC Specialist of the Week after she opened the 2015 season with a 10.0 vault mark at Ball State.
Baker's Performance:
Baker made her collegiate all-around debut in the SEC opener versus Auburn, taking third at 39.35. It was the highest all-around total by a league freshman last weekend. She also tied for second in her first floor performance (9.85) and was third on vault (9.875).
Baker has competed in seven events through the Gators' first two meets of 2015 and has hit each routine.
McMurtry's Performance:
Earning a perfect mark in only her second collegiate meet, McMurtry is the quickest Gator to a 10.0. Three Gators have now earned vault 10.0s as a freshman as Savannah Evans (vault/2004) and Susan Hines (vault/1996) turned in their perfect marks in the final home meet of their first seasons. Melanie Sinclair twice posted uneven bar 10.0s as a redshirt freshman in 2007.
McMurtry also made her collegiate debut for uneven bars and balance beam Friday versus Auburn. She was second in the dual meet's bars competition at 9.925 and also turned in a 9.85 on balance beam.
Next up for the Gators:
The No. T-1 Gators 2015 SEC road opener is Friday, Jan. 23 at No. 7 Alabama in the Coleman Coliseum.
The Florida-Alabama dual will air live beginning at 8 p.m. ET on the SEC Network (Gainesville/Ocala Cox cable channel 68 or 1068). A live stream can be seen at SEC Network+ for all SEC Network subscribers.
