GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Spring action started Saturday for the Gator soccer team with an exhibition match versus FC Bayern Munich at the James G. Pressly Stadium.
Four different players scored to give FC Bayern a 4-0 win. Florida head coach Becky Burleigh liked what she saw from the Gators versus FC Bayern, which currently is second in the Frauen Bundesliga standings.
Hear from the Gators:
On tonight's match:
“What a tremendous opportunity. It is kind of a once in a lifetime thing to get to play a team this good and ranked so high in the Bundesliga. I think it was a great experience for our team. Some of these players we'll cheer for in the World Cup this summer.
“I thought we had some players who really stepped up to the challenge. Our whole team as a group will leave this experience with some confidence. I think there are some individual who can take a lot from this, whether it is people who played for the first time significantly or whether it's the veterans who gained more and more experience against players like this.
“I think anytime you can play quality players and quality teams – and get some success out of it – that's when you are going to grow. That success may not be measured in the final result; that success may be measured in your individual performance.” – Florida Coach Becky Burleigh
On playing a professional team:
It was a definitely a step up. We were just excited because we didn't know what to expect because we haven't seen them play. We went in open minded – it was really fun. We played better than I had anticipated
I think this game started our spring on a positive note. We saw that we can play with one of the best teams overseas.” – rising senior defender Christen Westphal
Next up:
The Gators are in action again Friday, Jan. 30 when they play the U.S. Under 20 National Team. Match time is set for 7 p.m. at the Seminole Soccer Complex in Orlando, Fla.
