Gators Hold On, Clinch Winning Season with Victory Over ECU in Birmingham Bowl
Saturday, January 3, 2015 | Football, Scott Carter
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Moments earlier it looked as if Gators cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III was about to recover a fumble with East Carolina inside Florida's 20-yard line.
Instead, his path to the ball was blocked by a referee and East Carolina recovered.
It didn't matter.
Hargreaves still came up with a turnover when he intercepted East Carolina quarterback Shane Carden's pass in the end zone with 1 minute, 16 seconds left.
Hargreaves' pick sealed Florida's 28-20 victory over the Pirates here Saturday at Legions Field in the Birmingham Bowl, clinching a winning season for the Gators (7-5).
Florida's win under interim head coach D.J. Durkin and with new head coach Jim McElwain watching from a booth in the press box, made the Gators the only team from the Sunshine State to win a bowl game this season.
