ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Florida women's tennis team had a phenomenal day on the tennis courts at the USTA/ITA Southeast Regional Championships in Athens, Ga. on Friday.
For the first time this fall season, all eight of the UF women's tennis players were competing in the same tournament and the results were solid. The highly-ranked Gators were able to take seven of the eight matches in the singles round of 64 action.
The round of 32 saw seven Gators competing. Spencer Liang stormed back from a set down in her match to defeat the No. 58-ranked Silvia Garcia of Georgia, 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. Newcomer Anna Danilina was able to defeat Georgia Tech's No. 35-ranked Paige Hourigan in straight-sets, 6-3, 6-3. The five other Gators used straight-set victories to move on to the round of 16 tomorrow.
In doubles action, the Orange and Blue swept the competition in the round of 32. The No. 1-ranked tandem of Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan defeated Kamoe and Vovk of Georgia State, 8-6. Peggy Porter and Liang took down the Miami duo of Fuentes and Ogando, 8-6. Josie Kuhlman and Belinda Woolcock were victorious over Crenshaw and Whittaker of FSU, 8-1 and Danilina and Brianna Morgan won their match against Georgia's Gould and Patterson.
The Gators will continue match play tomorrow beginning with the singles consolation quarterfinals.
Coach Thornqvist's Thoughts:
“We were fantastic from start to finish today. We have improved our mobility and looked much quicker to the corners today. Tomorrow will obviously be more difficult, but we strive to sustain our physical play throughout the tournament!”
