Tuesday, October 27, 2015 | Women's Golf
The Florida women's golf team captured the team title, while junior Maria Torres brought home the individual crown at the Alamo Invitational in San Antonio on Tuesday. In the final round, the No. 19 Gators recorded the lowest round of the day for the second straight day, an under par team score of -9 (279), and tied for the lowest team score in program history at -6 (858). The Gators led throughout the tournament, beating runner-up No. 6 Arkansas and the 15-team field by 12 stokes at the par-72 Briggs Ranch Golf Club 6,450-yard course.
Torres earned her first collegiate championship, using a Round 3 score of -3 (69) to tie her career-best 54-hole score of -6 (210). Junior Karolina Vlckova carded back-to-back under par scores to finish tied for second place at -1 (215), in the 78-player field.
Junior transfer Sydney Needham (competing as an individual) made an impression in her first competition in Orange and Blue, as she tied sophomore Taylor Tomlinson for sixth by recording a 1-over 217 total. In the Gators' fall season finale, every member of the Orange and Blue finished in the top-25, including junior Kelly Grassel and freshman Sam Wagner, who finished tied for 12th and 23rd, respectively.
The Gators have now accumulated 97 team titles in program history, and 73 individual titles. The win was the first for UF since claiming the Briar's Creek Invitational in Johns Island, S.C., in March.
Head Coach Emily Glaser:
On the Gators' Alamo Invitational title:
“It was a great day. I'm obviously happy for the team to win, but I'm even more impressed in the way in which they did it. From the beginning, we never let up and they went out and had to win it, it wasn't given to them. To have the entire team shoot under par today is a testament to how bad they wanted it, and how hard they have worked this fall. It's a great way to end the fall season, and this victory should help the team realize their true potential.”
On Maria Torres' individual title:
“I couldn't be more proud of Maria. She came back from summer break a different person. She has been a more vocal member of the team this year, she has paid more attention to detail, and has really taken ownership of herself and her golf game. She deserved this win.”
Junior Maria Torres:
On capturing her first collegiate win:
“It feels amazing, but I am still in a little bit of shock. Today I saw that hard work and patience really pays off in the long run. In the offseason I will work on some different aspects of my game. I have to keep working hard so I'll be ready for the spring season.”
