Monday, December 14, 2015 | Football
Coach McElwain and six Florida Gators were selected for 2015 AP All-SEC honors, the Associated Press announced on Monday afternoon. Three Gators were named to the First Team Defense, Jon Bullard as a defensive lineman, Vernon Hargreaves and Jalen Tabor as cornerbacks. Senior tight end Jake McGee was selected to the Second Team Offense, Antonio Morrison was tabbed to the Second Team Defense as well as punter Johnny Townsend.
Bullard led the Gator defense in tackles for a loss and sacks during the season. The Shelby, N.C. native used 17.5 tackles for a loss to push opponents back 88 yards throughout the 2015 campaign, while also compiling six and a half sacks. Tabor led the Gators with 14 pass breakups, grabbing four interceptions along the way. Hargreaves matched Tabor with four interceptions and had 152 return yards for UF.
After redshirting last season, McGee has grabbed 41 receptions for 381 yards during the 2015 season. Those 41 receptions are good for the eighth-most by an SEC tight end in a season since 2005 and third-most by UF tight end since 1996. The Richmond, Va. native also ranks tied for 11th among FBS tight ends in receptions.
With 97 tackles this season, Morrison leads the Gator defensive unit with 56 of those tackles being unassisted. The Bellwood, Ill. native also contributed three quarterback hurries, one pass breakup and one forced fumble. Redshirt sophomore Townsend was instrumental to the Gators during the 2015 campaign. The Orlando native led the SEC in punting yards this year with 3,549 and an average of 44.4 yards per punt.
In earning his first AP SEC Coach of the Year honor, Coach McElwain has guided the Florida Gators to a 10-3 record and their first SEC East Division Title since 2009. The former head coach at Colorado State took over the program in January after the Gators had finished 11-13 the past two years and led the Gators back into the national spotlight behind a superb defensive unit.
The Gators will continue the 2015 season with a trip to Orlando for the Buffalo Wild Wings Citrus Bowl against the Michigan Wolverines set to take place on Jan. 1, 2016. The game will be broadcast on ABC at 1 p.m.
