Gators No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball Preseason Poll
Monday, December 21, 2015 | Baseball
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida was ranked No. 1 in Collegiate Baseball's Fabulous 40 NCAA Division I Preseason Poll released on Monday. It marks the eighth-straight season that head coach Kevin O'Sullivan's club has been ranked during the preseason in the nation's oldest college baseball poll, which began in 1959. The Gators were No. 25 in 2009, No. 9 in 2010, No. 2 in 2011, No. 1 in 2012, No. 24 in 2013, No. 16 in 2014 and No. 6 last season.
Florida headlines the publication's top five, followed by Louisville, Vanderbilt, Miami (FL) and Texas A&M. The Orange and Blue will begin the 2016 campaign on Feb. 19 at McKethan Stadium, when Florida Gulf Coast visits for the opener of a three-game series.
Last season, UF went 52-18 and ranked third in the final polls after becoming the only program in the country to earn a top-eight national seed for NCAA play for the sixth time in seven years. The Gators also swept through the Gainesville Regionals and Super Regionals held at McKethan Stadium. The incoming class has been ranked No. 1 by Collegiate Baseball, the program's seventh consecutive time in the top eight classes in the country.
Florida joins all of other SEC programs in the poll, as every team is either ranked (Vanderbilt, 3rd; Texas A&M, 5th; LSU, 7th; Mississippi State, 11th; Arkansas, 24th; Kentucky, 29th; Missouri, 34th; South Carolina, 35th) or receiving votes (Auburn, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia).
The contest with the Eagles begins the 33-game home schedule at McKethan Stadium, where the Gators boast a 231-69 (.770) mark in O'Sullivan's tenure.
