Tuesday, December 8, 2015 | Football
Former University of Florida wide receiver Wes Chandler was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night at the 58th NFF Annual Awards Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Chandler becomes the 11th overall Gator to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Florida has now had five players elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in the past 10 years – the most of any school in the Southeastern Conference.
"That's an honor that words really can't describe how I feel at this moment," Chandler told GatorZone.com in January. "I know that there's a lot of great players that have played that great game of college football. There's a lot of names that you recognize that have come before you and after you that have set major marks in that game. And to be considered in that elite class and recognized by individuals who say that you played the game at a level high enough to be honored, I'm very grateful."
Chandler was a two-time first-team All-American at Florida as a wide receiver despite playing in a run-oriented Wishbone offense. He caught 92 passes in his career for 1,963 yards and a school-record 28 touchdowns in four seasons. He played in the 1978 Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game prior to the being selected third overall in the 1978 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints.
Chandler's success didn't stop following his college career. In 11 seasons in the NFL, he earned Pro Bowl honors four times and was named to the NFL All-Pro team in 1982. Chandler totaled nearly 9,000 receiving yards and scored 56 touchdowns playing for the Saints, San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers.
Following his playing career, Chandler spent over 15 years coaching with stops in college, the NFL and NFL Europe.
With Chandler's induction in 2015, Florida has had five players selected for college football's prestigious honor in the past 10 years – the most of any school in the Southeastern Conference.
