GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 2 Florida track and field team was looking to finish the 2015 indoor regular season with momentum heading into the postseason, and that's exactly what they did Saturday in both Ames and Fayetteville. Senior jumper Marquis Dendy put an exclamation point on the day with a world and NCAA-leading triple jump mark on his final attempt of the series with a 56 foot, 6.5-inch leap (17.23m), his best performance in two years.
Dendy notched the No. 9 triple-jump mark in collegiate history, and that was just the tip of the iceberg for the Gators on Valentine's Day. Women's sprinter Kyra Jefferson made it look easy in the 200m with a NCAA and world-leading 22.81 herself, and both Robin Reynolds (23.16) and Destinee Gause (23.22) followed in suit, resulting in three Gators in the top five of the event. In Ames, 800m men's runners Andres Arroyo (1:46.78) and Ryan Schnulle (1:47.29) both ran PRs, the No. 2 & 4 times in school history and top-six marks in the NCAA this year.
In all, the Gators turned in a total of 18 PRs or season-best marks to wrap up UF's final tune-up before the championships season arrives. First up, SEC Indoors at Nutter Field House in Lexington Feb. 27-28 before NCAA Indoors back at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville March 13-14.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“I thought we had a fantastic day today. We, as a staff, challenged our team to go out this afternoon and match the intensity of our competitors. I thought they did that. Starting off in Iowa, what Andres (Arroyo) and Ryan (Schnulle) were able to do -- the No. 2 and No. 4 800m runs in school history was impressive. I thought the women's 200m ladies were phenomenal. They really kick started us here in Fayetteville. Kyra (Jefferson) is getting closer and closer to the school record and Robin (Reynolds) and Destinee (Gause) both had PRs. I thought Shayla (Sanders) did a really nice job as well. For the men, Dedric (Dukes), coming off an injury, had a really solid 200m and we're excited about the future for him.
Stipe (Zunic) did a great job and to see him come out and compete against a really tough field in the shot put was good. Jhonny Victor did a fantastic job of matching his PR in the high jump as well.
Gissell (Warner) had a big PR in the triple jump and we've known that's been coming for a while, but it was still good to see it, and it was good to see Darrielle (McQueen) do exactly what she is capable of in the triple jump.
Then, to cap it all off with (Marquis) Dendy was fantastic … Watching him do what he did today was so impressive (in the triple jump). The No. 3 mark in school history and the No. 9 performance in collegiate history -- a really impressive day as a whole.
We have our conference meet in two weeks and we'll get back to Gainesville, get focused, rested, and get healthy -- both mentally and physically -- to prepare to go to battle with the best conference in the country.”
