Sunday, February 15, 2015 | Soccer
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Gator soccer team claimed a 2-1 over Clemson in a spring season match played Saturday evening in front of 2,500 at the James G. Pressly Stadium.
Each team scored in the opening half. A pair of Gator All-Americans connected for the first goal of the match. Christen Westphal sent a long ball forward, which Savannah Jordan caught up to and then chipped over the oncoming Clemson goalkeeper in the 21st minute. Clemson got on the board 10 minutes later when Claire Wagner put in a 23-yard free kick.
The only goal of the second half came off a Clemson clearance attempt that went awry, scoring a goal for the Gators.
Hear from the Becky Burleigh:
On tonight's match:
“I thought some of our younger players got a good bit of experience in tonight's game against a quality opponent. I think it was a big step for the younger players. For the older players, they were able to sort of impose their way and really produce a good result.
“We've actually spent a lot of time on team defending. We saw some of that tonight. We had a couple of individual breakdowns but I thought we had some good team defending as well.” – Florida Coach Becky Burleigh
Next up:
The Gators continue play against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents next weekend. Florida meet Duke next Saturday and then North Carolina on Sunday. Both matches are at the Wake Med Park in Cary, N.C.
