Team Notes
Florida (6-1) claimed three of its four games last week, downing USF on the road Wednesday night, 13-3, and then notching a series victory over No. 8 Miami (4-3, 2-7, 2-1)…The Gators have now defeated the Hurricanes in 19 of the past 24 meetings and have taken five of the last six regular-season series between the Sunshine State rivals (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015)…The three-game series drew 14,476 fans to McKethan Stadium, the fourth-highest total in school history…Sophomore center fielder Buddy Reed led UF with a .444 (8-for-18) average last week and was 5-for-12 (.417) against Miami, highlighted by a walk-off single in the ninth inning to cap Friday's 4-3 win…Junior right-hander Taylor Lewis (1-0, 0.00) earned the decision on Friday and registered the save on Sunday…Sophomore right-hander Dane Dunning fired five no-hit innings and Lewis recorded the final four outs as Florida edged Miami, 2-1, in Sunday's rubber game…Over a career-high five innings, Dunning (2-0, 1.93) did not allow any hits, gave up one unearned run, totaled four strikeouts and issued three walks…Junior lefty Danny Young (1.2 IP) set the down the first five batters he faced before yielding a two-out single to Brandon Lopez in the seventh inning for the visitors' first hit of the contest….Sophomore right-hander Shaun Anderson had sophomore Johnny Ruiz ground out to keep the Orange and Blue in front…Anderson struck out the first two Hurricanes in the eighth before sophomore Zack Collins greeted sophomore southpaw Kirby Snead with a base-hit into right field…Lewis then jammed junior David Thompson on a pop-up to preserve the lead…With the Hurricanes down to their final two outs, George Iskenderian legged out an infield single…A grounder by senior Garrett Kennedy moved his teammate into position with the potential tying run before Lewis had Lopez fly out to right field to complete the contest and collect his first save as a Gator…Reed had tied the game in the third with a two-out RBI single off of junior Enrique Sosa (1-1)...Freshman Christian Hicks had drawn a leadoff walk and advanced around the bases on ground balls by freshmen Logan Browning and Dalton Guthrie (.345, six runs)…Junior Harrison Bader moved the Gators in front, 2-1, by launching a solo homer in the fourth inning over the left-field bleachers…The Bronxville, N.Y., native is hitting a team-best. 423 and leads the SEC in homers (four) and RBI (15)…Miami scored in four of the first five innings and used a strong outing from junior left-hander Thomas Woodrey to square the series, 7-2, on Saturday night in front of 6,081 fans, the second-highest crowd in school history…Freshman JJ Schwarz (.280, nine RBI) belted his third homer in the setback for the hosts…Reed delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to score senior Josh Tobias from second base as UF pulled out a 4-3 decision on Friday night…Lewis picked up his first win as a Gator by stranding a Hurricane on third to complete the eighth and then retired the side in order in the ninth before Reed's heroics…Tobias was hit by a pitch from freshman Michael Mediavilla (0-1) to start the final frame, was sacrificed to second base on a bunt by sophomore Ryan Larson (.333, four RBI) and came home with the decisive run on Reed's base-hit into left center field with two strikes…The Gators had tied the game in the sixth inning on a two-run single with two down by freshman Mike Rivera (.286, six RBI) and used Reed's game-winning hit for their first walk-off victory since April 27, 2014 (Missouri)…Junior Bobby Poyner (0-0, 2.70) retired the first 11 Hurricanes before yielding a two-out single in the fourth to Thompson…Poyner's seven strikeouts equaled his career best set on April 19, 2014, against Georgia and over 5.1 innings, the southpaw gave up four hits and two runs…Sophomore Brett Morales (1-0, 0.00) retired all 18 batters he faced as Florida downed USF, 13-3, on Wednesday night at Red McEwen Field…The right-hander totaled a career-high seven strikeouts and threw 70 pitches in his first outing of the campaign...Schwarz (3-for-5) drove in a career-high five RBI, with a towering two-run homer in the fifth inning and a three-run triple during the Gators' seven-run eighth inning…Reed went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI, while Bader continued his torrid start by going 2-for-3 with three RBI…Florida faces Florida Atlantic (6-1) in Jupiter, Fla., on Tuesday before hosting Stony Brook (2-4) in a weekend series at McKethan Stadium.
