Thursday, April 23, 2015 | Track and Field
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gator track and field faithful have one more opportunity Friday to see the No. 2 Florida teams in action at home as the Orange and Blue play host to the Tom Jones Memorial at James G. Pressly Stadium in Gainesville. Admission is free to the meet, which honors former longtime University of Florida women's track and field coach Tom Jones, who passed away on March 21, 2007, after a courageous battle with cancer.
The one-day invitational will feature 12 universities, along with a number of international and professional competitors. In addition to the Gators, Bethune-Cookman, East Carolina, FAU, FSU, Jacksonville, Kentucky, Miami, North Carolina, TCU, UCF, UNF and USF are all scheduled to compete at Percy Beard Track Friday.
Action kicks off at 11 a.m. with four field events, the men's hammer and women's discus, pole vault and long jump, while athletes hit the track for running competition at 1 p.m. for the 4x1 relays. Florida track and field fans can follow the Gators on twitter @GZTrackField for pictures, video and live updates on all the competition.
THE GATORS HEADING INTO THE TOM JONES
After nearly a three-week training block following the 2015 Pepsi Florida Relays, the Gators will swing back into action this week with the Tom Jones Memorial at Percy Beard Track in Gainesville Friday. Both Florida's men's and women's teams checked in at No. 2 in this week's USTFCCCA National Team Computer Rankings and senior men's jumper Marquis Dendy represented UF on the first outdoor The Bowerman Award Watch List last week. The Orange and Blue still own the top marks in the SEC in six events -- Dedric Dukes: 200 (20.31), Kyra Jefferson: 400 (51.50), Claudia Francis: 800 (2:03.72), Bridgette Owens: 100H (12.75w) and both the men's and women's 4x4 relays -- while the men's 4x4 mark of 3:01.78 from the 2015 Pepsi Florida Relays is still tops in the world so far through the outdoor season.
