Kyra Jefferson Breaks School Record in 200 Meters, No. 3 Gators Fine Tune at LSU Invitational
Saturday, May 2, 2015 | Track and Field
BATON ROUGE, La. -- For the second straight year, sophomore Kyra Jefferson smashed the school record in the 200m, using a 22.65 Saturday at the LSU Invitational to down her previous 22.78. Jefferson's race was just one highlight of a successful day for the No. 3 Florida track and field squads in their final big tune up before the 2015 conference championships in Starkville May 14-16.
The Gators had several standouts in the field events, including freshman Harry Glasser (4.96m/16-3.25) with an event win in the men's pole vault, while first-year jumper Jhonny Victor notched a career-high 2.09m/6-10.25 effort in the high jump. Senior veteran Fawn Miller won the javelin with her 56.01m/183-9.25 season-best heave.
Florida won nine events Saturday at Bernie Moore Track in Baton Rouge, where the home Tigers hosted Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss and Miami for the invitational.
In addition to Jefferson's record-breaking 22.65 (-0.7) run at 200m, the second-fastest in the NCAA, sophomore men's hurdler Yanick Hart had a breakthrough 110-meter hurdles performance with a 13.91 (-1.6) personal-best race, while the quartermilers stood out as always. Junior Arman Hall opened with a 46.02 in the men's 400m, while the Orange and Blue went 1-2 in the women's 400m behind Robin Reynolds (52.15) and Claudia Francis (52.51).
Senior Dedric Dukes went season-best marks in both the 100m (10.29, -0.7) and 200m (20.23, -0.8) and the men's 4x1 clocked a season-best 39.40 to kick off running events on the afternoon.
HEARING OUT HOLLOWAY
“I thought we had a really good day. It was great to come in here against some of the best teams in our conference, which happen to be some of the best in the country. We laid some great ground work for our team down the road. Obviously it was great for Kyra (Jefferson) breaking the school record in the 200m and Dedric (Dukes) getting out there was really good to see. I'm very happy with Fawn (Miller) in the javelin and Jhonny (Victor) in the high jump. I'm also very proud of Jontavia Dykes with a huge PR in the discus and especially happy for Yanick Hart in the hurdles. Coach Tucker has really been working with him and it's all starting to come around. Claudia had a great PR in the 400 and that will only help her with the 800, so we're really excited about that. Right now, we are just ready to get back to Gainesville and start preparing for the conference meet down the road here in a couple of weeks.”
