GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Junior cornerback Vernon Hargreaves was named to the 2015 Jim Thorpe Award preseason watch list on Monday, as announced by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
The Jim Thorpe Award (Best Defensive Back in College Football) includes 42 of the nation's best defensive backs, representing eleven conferences.
Following the 2014 season, Hargreaves was named to both the Associated Press and Coaches' All-Southeastern Conference First Team, CBS Sports All-America First Team and Walter Camp and AP All-American Second Team.
Statistically, the Tampa Bay, Fla. native totaled 45 tackles on the season, with two interceptions and an SEC-leading 13 passes broken up, besting his record-setting 11 pass break ups recorded last season, which equaled the most by a true freshman in school history, matching the total Janoris Jenkins had in 2008.
The Jim Thorpe Award watch list is chosen by a screening committee who compile a list of 30-50 players. The list is not final, and players who have outstanding seasons are added as the season progresses. The Thorpe Award Winner is selected from three finalists and will be announced at The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 10, 2015 on ESPN.
