NEW YORK -- A total of 20 University of Florida lacrosse players were among over 2,000 BIG EAST Conference student-athletes to pick up All-Academic Team honors for the 2014-15 season, announced Thursday by the league office.
Florida 2015 All-Americans Shannon Gilroy and Caroline Fitzgerald paced the Gators' All-Academic honorees, while six of Florida's eight 2015 All-BIG EAST Team members also got it done in the classroom. A trio of freshmen in Aniya Flanagan, Bella O'Connor and Allie Pavinelli also represented the Orange and Blue with All-Academic honors.
In the classroom, departing senior Nora Barry was selected to the Capital One Academic All-District At-Large Team last spring after graduating in May with honors and a bachelor's degree in mathematics. Barry carried a 3.98 GPA throughout her four years at Florida and was Florida's nominee for the prestigious McWhorter Award. The Orange and Blue were the 2015 BIG EAST regular-season and tournament champions behind Gilroy's Midfielder of the Year accolade and her MOP honor during BIG EAST tourney play.
Barry and Gilroy completed their senior campaigns with a bang as both were both selected to play in the IWLCA North-South Senior Game, while Gilroy was a nominee for the Honda Award for Lacrosse and a Tewaaraton Award Finalist. Barry was a nominee for the 2015 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Gilroy was later named to the 2015-16 U.S. National Lacrosse Team alongside teammate Mollie Stevens.
Nominations for the All-Academic Team are submitted by each of the BIG EAST's 10 member and seven affiliate institutions. To be eligible for the honor, a nominee must have competed in a BIG EAST-sponsored sport, attained a minimum grade-point average of 3.00 for the preceding academic year, and completed a minimum of two consecutive semesters or three consecutive quarters of academic work, with a total of 18 semester or 27 quarter credits, not including remedial courses.
The nominations are reviewed and approved by the BIG EAST Academic Affairs Committee. There are 2,197 honorees for the 2014-15 academic year, over 100 more than were honored in 2013-14.
