U.S. versus Japan – July 5, 2015
Women's World Cup gold goes to the U.S. after Sunday's 5-2 win over Japan. The seven goals marked the most offensive output in a Women's World Cup final. Carli Lloyd turned the first hat-trick in World Cup history to earn the tournament's most valuable player honor. The other U.S. goals came from Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath.
Gator Great Abby Wambach entered the match in the 79th minute, earning her 249th U.S. National Team cap. She was given the captain's armband when she entered the match.
Wambach is the second Gator to be a part of a Women's World Cup gold-medal team. Gator Great Danielle Fotopoulos was part of the U.S.'s last World Cup gold-medal team in 1999. Both were part of Florida's 1998 NCAA champion soccer team.
