BEIJING – Former Florida track and field standout Novlene Williams-Mills ran a season-best time of 51.07, placing second in her heat and earning an automatic berth in the women's 400 meters semifinals on day three of the IAAF World Championships in Beijing.
Williams-Mills, who earned a bronze medal in this event back in 2007, is seeking her fifth 400 meters finals appearance, which would be the most in World Championships history. The Jamaican sprinter and five-time World Championships medalist will race in Heat 3 on Tuesday night.
Horizontal jumper Marquis Dendy finished 21st overall in long jump qualifying, posting a mark of 7.78 meters (25' 6.25”). The 2015 USATF Outdoor Championships long jump gold medalist fouled on two of his three attempts. Dendy now turns his attention to Wednesday morning's triple jump qualifying.
Representing Australia, Genevieve LaCaze made her World Championships debut in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. LaCaze crossed in 9:39.35, taking seventh place in her heat and 22nd overall. Only the top three finishers from each heat and the six fastest remaining times earned spots in the finals.
