BEIJING – On the final day of the IAAF World Championships, former Florida track and field standouts Tony McQuay and Novlene Williams-Mills made sure to go out in style, as both led their respective 4x400-meter relay teams to gold medals.
First, Williams-Mills turned in an impressive anchor leg to secure a comeback victory for the Jamaicans. The United States was out in front on the final lap, but Williams-Mills erased the deficit and gave Jamaica its first World Championships 4x400 relay gold medal since 2001.
It was Williams-Mills first World Championships gold medal, and sixth overall, breaking a tie with Dennis Mitchell for the most by a former Gator. Five of those medals have come in the women's 4x400 relay—tied for the second-most in history.
McQuay capped the evening as a member of the fastest World Championships men's 4x400 relay team since 2007. The United States crossed with a world-leading time of 2:57.82, collecting their sixth consecutive World Championships gold medal in the event.
It was the second straight gold medal-winning effort for McQuay, as he helped the Americans to a victory at the 2013 World Championships as well.
All in all, former Gators claimed three gold medals and one silver medal at this year's World Championships.
NBC will air a tape-delayed version of Sunday's evening session at 2 p.m. ET this afternoon.
