KAZAN, Russia -- Success carried into Day Four for the University of Florida swim team on Wednesday afternoon as the Gators positioned five swimmers into top-8 scoring positions at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
Five former Gators opened today's competition by stealing the show in the 200-meter individual medley prelims. Ryan Lochte (1:57.90) won the event and was followed by Dan Wallace (1:58.28) who took second, Conor Dwyer (1:58.63) in fourth, Marcin Cieslak (1:59.99) in sixth and Carlos Omana (2:03.54) who came in 27th. Lochte, Wallace, Dwyer and Cieslak each qualified for the semi-finals.
With a strong showing in the prelims, the foursome wasn't done there. Lochte (1st, 1:56.81), Wallace (4th, 1:57.77) and Cieslak (6th, 1:58.20) automatically qualified for Thursday's finals. Dwyer, who tied for eighth with a time of 1:58.54, would have a swim-off to see if he would join the Gator alums in the finals.
Dwyer, a 2011 graduate, kept the Orange and Blue momentum going with his best swim of the day; a 1:58.18 to edge Great Britain's Robert Pavoni by .08 seconds for the win.
Jan Switkowski capped the UF swimming events on Wednesday with an outstanding third-place finish in the 200-meter butterfly. Switkowski, a transfer from Virginia Tech, claimed the bronze medal after touching out with a time of 1:58.20.
The Gators resume competition tomorrow afternoon inside Kazan Arena for Day Five of competition.
