LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic - After turning in a pair of top-10 showings at the Latin America Amateur Championship last year, University of Florida sophomore golfer Alejandro Tosti and freshman Jorge Garcia aim for another set of strong performances when they return to the 2016 event on Thursday.
Competing for Argentina, Tosti shot 10-under par at the 2015 Latin America Amateur Championship to earn runner-up honors. He was one stroke shy of champion Matias Dominguez. Garcia, competing for Venezuela, shot 2-under par to land in 10th place.
This year's championship will be played at the par-72 Casa de Campo's Teeth of the Dog course in the Dominican Republic and will span four rounds. The 108-golfer field, selected based on golfers with top World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), will be cut to 50 after the second round Friday.
The champion will receive an invitation to compete in the Masters Tournament, the U.S. Amateur Championship and the Amateur Championship. Both the winner and the runner-up will be awarded exemptions into qualifiers for The Open and the U.S. Open.
Tosti and Garcia are grouped with 2015 champion Dominguez for the first two rounds. The trio will tee off at 10:56 a.m. on Thursday and 6:26 a.m. on Friday. Live scoring is available here.
Florida's spring season will begin Feb. 1 at the Sea Best Invitational in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
