No. 2 South Carolina wins 1-0 2OT over No. 17 Florida

Florida and USC have extended to overtime in three of last four meetings.

COLUMBIA, S.C.  – A penalty kick in the second overtime gave South Carolina a 1-0 double OT win over the Florida soccer team Sunday afternoon in front of 2,179 at the Eugene E. Stone III Stadium.

It was the sixth overtime meeting in the 28 match all-time series between the two teams – and the third overtime of the last four meetings.

How the Penalty Kick Was Awarded:
The play that ended with the penalty kick being awarded started when South Carolina Savanna McCaskill received the ball from Simone Wark. McCaskill sent a back heel pass into the box as Wark continued her run into the box. Gators defenders Julia Lester and Kristen Cardano tried to win control of the ball on either side of Work when the official whistled for a penalty kick. Chelsea Drennan placed the ball high to the right of Gator goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese to end the match.

Gator Chances:
The Gators had a couple of good looks to score in the opening half. In the 34th minute, sophomore Mayra Pelayo's 20-yard shot kicked off the cross bar.

With two minutes remaining in the opening half, Pelayo played a ball through the middle which Savannah Jordan ran down. Her shot from 10 yards was deflected by USC goalkeeper Mikayla Krzeczowkski.

With five minutes remaining in regulation, freshman Kit Loferski sent a deep cross across the face of the goal. Senior Savannah Jordan just missed getting her head on that cross. Shortly after, Pelayo was deep in the USC box and got off two shots.

Worth Noting:
  • Marckese equaled her collegiate high of six saves for the fourth time this season (also at No. 4 Stanford, versus UCF and Georgia).
  • This is the third time in 2016 Florida has been shutout (also 1-0 OT loss at No. 4 Stanford and 3-0 home loss to Auburn).
  • Florida is 2-3-1 all-time versus South Carolina in overtime contests.
  • South Carolina and Bucknell are the only two unbeaten teams remaining in NCAA Division I.

2016 Records:
Florida: 10-4, 5-3 SEC
USC: 14-0-1, 8-0 SEC
