Johnny Townsend Named Ray Guy Punter of Week

UF punter ranks second in nation, averaging 50.2 yards per punt.
AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Augusta Sports Council and Ray Guy Award announced Johnny Townsend as the Ray Guy Award Punter of the Week on Monday. Townsend played an integral role in helping Florida defeat Vanderbilt in a 13-6 win on Saturday, punting seven times for 363 yards. He averaged 51.9 yards per punt with five punts marked inside Vanderbilt's 20-yard line. Townsend's net average from this weekend's game was 49.9. His long punt was 62 yards, which was a career-high for the redshirt junior.
Townsend has 24 career punts for 1,205 yards, with an average of 50.21 yards per punt, which is the second-best average among all FBS punters. In his career at UF, he has placed nine punts inside the 20 and has 15 boots over 50 yards. This is the second recognition Townsend has received from the Augusta Sports Council, as he was a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award last year. This is Townsend's first honor of the 2016 season, and it comes one week after being named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
The Gators' punter boasts a 3.25 grade point average as a Telecommunications (Management) major and has been involved in eight different community service initiatives during his time as a Gator. The Orlando native is a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll.
