
Szaranek Breaks Three Scottish Records at FINA Short Course Worlds

WINDSOR, Ontario – Swimming for Great Britain at the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) last week, Florida junior Mark Szaranek competed in five events and broke Scottish national records in two of them.
On Tuesday, the opening day of the competition, Szaranek set a new standard in the 200 IM, finishing second overall in the heats at 1:53.77. In the final, he placed sixth at 1:54.45.
The following day, he broke the 100 fly record, finishing 13th in the heats at 51.35 and moving on to the semifinal.
On Thursday, in the 100 IM heats, he broke that event record by .02 seconds, finishing in 10th place overall at 53.40. In the semifinals, Szaranek placed 14th, touching at 53.53.
Szaranek also finished fifth in the 400 IM finals at 4:04.57. He swam on Great Britain's 800 free relay squad, which finished eighth in its heat at 7:01.03, and split 1:46.01.
Additionally, two Gator alumni appeared at FINA Short Course Worlds. Icelandic athlete Hilda Luthersdottir swam the 50 and 100 breast, 100 IM, 200 medley relay and mixed 200 medley relay, while one of Szaranek's Great Britain teammates, Dan Wallace, competed in the 200 free and 200 IM.
