KeVaughn Allen Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Monday, February 1, 2016 | Men's Basketball
Allen the first Gator since Michael Frazier II to earn league Freshman of the Week honors.
KeVaughn Allen scored 19 points in the Gators' win over ninth-ranked West Virginia on Saturday. The Southeastern Conference took notice, naming Allen the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday.
Against a Mountaineers defense that entered the weekend ranked best in the nation by KenPom.com, Allen not only knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, but also capitalized on WVU's aggressive style to earn a 9-for-9 day at the free throw line.
While the Gators didn't sweep the week, Allen added 16 points in UF's loss at Vanderbilt. He spearheaded the team's rally bid, scoring 11 points in the final 32 seconds of the game.
Allen had efficient numbers across the board this week, shooting .500 from the field, .556 from 3-point range and knocking down all 10 free throws. He is the only SEC freshman to average 10 points, hit 50 percent from the field and beyond the arc and sink all his free throws.
Allen's emergence as a consistent scoring threat has helped propel Florida's recent success. The Gators are 4-1 over their last 5 games with Allen averaging 18.4 points per game over that stretch. Allen has averaged 14.6 points per game so far in SEC play.
The Gators have garnered SEC recognition two straight weeks following Dorian Finney-Smith's honor as SEC Player of the Week last week. Allen marks the first Gator to be named SEC Freshman of the Week since Michael Frazier II, who earned the honor twice during the 2012-13 season.
