Dressel sets U.S., NCAA, and SEC records on Wednesday morning
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- University of Florida sprinter Caeleb Dressel swam a remarkable 50-Yard freestyle on Wednesday afternoon in Day Two preliminary competition at the 2016 SEC Championships.
The Green Cove Springs, Florida, native posted a time of 18.39 in the event, a time that now stands as an American, NCAA, and SEC record.
In just his sophomore season at UF, Dressel's time of 18.39 bests three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Nathan Adrian's former American record (18.66), Cesar Cielo's -- the most renown swimmer in Brazilian History -- U.S. Open record time of 18.47, and Cielo's NCAA Meet record of 18.47.
Entering Day-Two competition at the meet, Dressel had previously held a personal best time of 18.67 in the event, which already topped Gator Greats Ryan Lochte and Brad DeBorde.
Lochte, an 11-time Olympic Medalist was quick to congratulate Dressel via. Twitter.
