Alex McMurtry Finds Perfection in Competition and Classroom
Thursday, February 11, 2016 | Gymnastics
Alex McMurtry's transition from freshman to sophomore means one thing to her: no more pressure. Now the rest of the sophomore class and she can just focus on having fun. They have made a name for themselves and they are ready to be leaders for the freshman class and show what they can do.
"I think we've definitely established ourselves as gymnasts and given ourselves confidence knowing that we're a part of a national championship team," McMurtry said.
Perfect scores are becoming a regular occurrence for McMurtry.
McMurtry's most recent perfect mark came in the fourth meet of the season against Alabama. She anchored the Gators' uneven bars lineup with a 10.0. It is the nation's only perfect bars mark of 2016.
This was not the first time McMurtry had found perfection. She put up a 10.0 on vault in 2015 versus Auburn in only her second collegiate meet.
Perfect can be found in another area of McMurtry's life: her grade point average. After three semesters at the University of Florida, McMurtry holds a 4.0 GPA. Even though her classes are getting a little tougher, she plans to keep it up.
"Once you have kept a 4.0, it becomes a perfectionist thing. Now I don't want to break it because I'll never be able to get it back," McMurtry said. "I would love to finish this semester and keep my 4.0 for my sophomore year as well."
When McMurtry isn't in the library studying or at the gym, she might be found in her hammock around campus. McMurtry brought the trend down from Virginia and now has her roommates doing it with her.
Senior Bridgette Caquatto, manager Lindsey Walker and McMurtry all live together in an apartment off-campus. According to McMurtry it can get a little chaotic. Among their household items are some Nerf guns and a break may include shooting at targets they have placed around the apartment.
Even though the apartment can get a little crazy, McMurtry wouldn't have it any other way.
"You're stressed with school and you're stressed with gym, but you can just come home and have a blast. No matter what time or day it is. We're pretty crazy in the apartment but we love it," McMurtry said.
