Sophomore standout gathers National Honors for second time this season
GAINESVILEE, Fla. -- University of Florida sophomore standout Caeleb Dressel has been named College Swimming's National Swimmer of the Week for the second time this season after leading the University of Florida men's team to their fourth straight and 37th overall SEC title.
Dressel, who was also named the men's 2016 SEC Swimmer of the Meet, finished the week with six SEC titles, seven NCAA 'A' cuts, and six newly acquired UF school records. Marcin Cieslak (2014) was the last Gator to receive the men's SEC Athlete of the Meet recognition.
"Caeleb Dressel has come so far since he's come here," Florida head Coach Gregg Troy noted at his press conference on Monday. "His times have had unbelievable improvements in a little over a year now -- and he continues to work hard at it."
Dressel, who shattered SEC and American records throughout the week, led all scorers with 96 individual points in addition to his 248 as a member of UF's relay teams.
"When you have leaders like Caeleb -- and he doesn't 'try' to be, he's just a natural born leader -- people gravitate toward that and he brings everyone in the right direction," Troy added.
Dressel and the Gators will return to action at the 2016 NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Georgia, from March 23-26.
