Three former Gators walk away Super Bowl champions on Sunday
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Three former University of Florida football players were crowned Super Bowl champions on Sunday following the Denver Broncos' 24-10 win over the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50. Receiver Andre Caldwell, offensive lineman Max Garcia, and linebacker Lerentee McCray each played for the Broncos.
With the three former Gators having competed on the biggest stage in sports once again, Super Bowl 50 now marks the 14th consecutive season in which a former UF player has appeared on the big stage, and the fifth straight year in which a former Gator has hoisted the Lombardi Trophy at the end of the night.
Caldwell, a member of Florida's 2006 National Championship team, played perhaps the biggest role among the former Gator Greats with 64 all-purpose yards. The third-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals made his presence felt early with an 18-yard kickoff return to open the game, and quickly followed up with a 22-yard third-down reception on the Broncos' opening drive. His 22-yard reception was Denver's fourth-longest play of the game.
McCray appeared as a member of the special team's unit for 28 plays but did not record any stats.
Max Garcia played a brief role on the offensive line, and as a member of the special team's units but did not register any stats.
Following completion of Super Bowl 50, 44 former UF standouts have now appeared in 34 Super Bowls since its inception in 1967.
