Gator Gymnasts Win Maryland Quad Meet with Season-Best Score
Saturday, March 13, 1999 | Gymnastics
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 15 University of Florida gymnastics team used its season-best score of 196.225 to win the Maryland quad meet, held Saturday evening in front of a Richey Coliseum crowd of 632. Florida's final team score also ranks as the third-highest total in UF history. The Gators registered their first win of the season over a top-10 team, as No. 9 Maryland was second with a 195.575, followed by George Washington (192.975) and Rhode Island (192.25).
"It was our most consistent meet of the season," UF Head Coach Judi Markell said. "We competed as a team and showed confidence throughout our lineup, which is great to see at this point in the season. It also felt good to knock off a team ranked ahead of us."
Florida's Chrissy Van Fleet claimed a least a share of three event titles Saturday night, including her 10th collegiate all-around title with a total of 39.525 – a total just a fraction away from her collegiate-best total of 39.55 set March 5 when she won the SunTrust Invitational all-around crown. Two other Gators posted season-best all-around totals Saturday, as junior Jaime Graziano was fourth at 39.175 and sophomore Gabby Fuchs turned in a collegiate-best total of 39.025 to take fifth overall.
Van Fleet claimed her second consecutive uneven bars title Saturday, this time matching her collegiate-best mark of 9.925. She also shared the evening's vault title with Maryland's Laura Moon at 9.85. Maryland's Kit Johnson won the evening's balance beam title with a 9.95 and GWU's Erica Lewy took the floor title at 9.925. Van Fleet was UF's top beam performer Saturday, taking third at 9.85. UF freshman Hilary Thompson and Van Fleet shared UF's top honors on floor, tying for second overall of 9.90.
Although the Gators didn't turn in any season-best team event totals Saturday, they were a tenth away of each 1999 event high, except balance beam, where UF was just .175 away from its season-best.
The Gators return home to play host to the 1999 regular-season finale, the Dodge Senior Night vs. Missouri, on Friday, March 19. Meet time is set for 7 p.m. in the Stephen C. O'Connell Center.
