GAINESVILLE, Fla. - It's another first for Florida's Jenny Rowland.
The Gators' gymnastics coach, in her first year as head of the Florida program, shares the Southeastern Conference Co-Coach of the Year award, the league office announced Thursday. She shares the coach of the year honor with Arkansas' Mark Cook. The SEC awards are based on a vote of the league coaches.
Rowland stepped in her first head coaching position last May, and under her guidance, the Gators own a 15-2 record and won the program's 10th SEC team title last Saturday in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Florida enters next week's NCAA Regional competition as the nation's second-seeded team. At least two Gators appear in the top 10 of each of the five event rankings, including a national high three in the all-around top 10.
Among the current Gator staff, she is the third to be named SEC Coach of the Year in their first season. The others are Jim McElwain (football/2015) and Mary Wise (volleyball/1991).
Florida shares the league-high at four for gymnasts on the All-SEC team. The All-SEC Team is comprised of the student-athletes with the top two event scores (including ties) in each session of the SEC Championships. The All-Freshman team is comprised of the freshmen student-athlete with the top score (including ties) on each event in each SEC Championships' session.
The four Gators on the 2016 All-SEC team are:
Kennedy Baker - ALL-SEC TEAM
Alicia Boren - ALL-SEC TEAM - ALL FRESHMAN TEAM
Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto - ALL-SEC TEAM
Alex McMurtry - ALL-SEC TEAM
