Florida Is One of Five Schools With Three Representatives on the List
GAINESVILLE, Fla. – University of Florida junior right-hander Shaun Anderson, sophomore right-hander Alex Faedo and junior right-hander Logan Shore were named to the initial Watch List for the 2016 National Pitcher of the Year Award, presented by the National College Baseball Hall of Fame. The award, sponsored by Diamond, will be presented on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the annual Night of Champions event.
Anderson has a 3-0 record with eight saves and a 1.38 earned run average in 19 appearances spanning 26 innings. Remarkably, the righty has tallied 39 strikeouts and issued one walk this season, while holding foes to a .194 performance. Anderson has five saves in eight SEC outings, to go along with a 1-0 mark and a 1.69 ERA in 10.2 innings.
Faedo is 7-1 with a 3.67 ERA and leads the Orange and Blue with 75 strikeouts in 54 innings. The righty rebounded from his first loss of the year against No. 10 Mississippi State with 10 strikeouts and permitted one run over 6.1 innings to complete the Gators' first sweep of Arkansas since 2001. He was chosen as the SEC Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 14 for the first time in his career after notching career highs in innings pitched (8.1) and strikeouts (13) in a 3-1 victory over Harvard.
Meanwhile, Shore is 7-0 with a 2.50 ERA in nine starts as Florida's Friday night starter. Over 54 innings, the right-hander has registered 57 strikeouts, permitted eight walks and has limited opponents to a .231 batting average. With his victory last week at Arkansas, the Coon Rapids, Minn., native tied the Gators' school-record streak of 12 straight wins set by Russ Kibler in 1984. Shore was chosen as the SEC Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career on Feb. 29 after twirling a four-hit shutout against No. 6 Miami. His effort marked only the eighth time in the 246-game series between the Sunshine State rivals that Florida had blanked Miami, fourth time in Coral Gables and the first time on the road since Feb. 13, 2004.
"Every year, the number of quality pitchers across the country makes compiling this list difficult, and this year is no different," said Raymond Richardson, Pitcher of the Year Award co-chair. "We are pleased to highlight so many quality athletes, and we look forward to seeing how the rest of the season goes for these young men."
Five schools have three representatives on the Watch List -- Florida, Louisville, South Carolina, TCU and Vanderbilt. The Southeastern Conference features 16 representatives, followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with 11.
"Having that many players from two conferences on this first list speaks to the quality of pitching in those leagues, but there are several conferences with more than one player on this list," said Brian Melakian, Pitcher of the Year Award co-chair. "No doubt those players will factor heavily into their teams' success as the season continues."
