Eriksson Breaks School Record at Virginia Challenge
Saturday, April 23, 2016 | Track and Field
Anders Eriksson's mark is the third-longest by an NCAA Division I freshman since at least 2002
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – University of Florida track and field freshman Anders Eriksson broke Jeremy Postin's school record in the hammer throw Saturday (April 23) night at the Virginia Challenge, which featured a trio of Gators throwers.
Eriksson's mark of 71.14 meters, 16 inches farther than the previous record, is the third-longest by any NCAA Division I freshman since at least 2002. Only Virginia Tech's Alexander Ziegler (72.43 meters, 2010) and Marcel Lomnicky (71.70 meters, 2009) threw farther as freshmen during that span.
The Swede is also just the eighth Southeastern Conference thrower to eclipse 71 meters prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships since 2002. Of that group, Eriksson is one of three underclassmen to accomplish the feat.
Additionally, Jayla Bostic took sixth in Friday (April 22) night's hammer throw, while Lloydricia Cameron finished fifth in the discus throw Saturday evening.
The Gators' next meets are the Penn Relays (April 29-30) and LSU Invitational (April 30), their final competitions before the SEC Championships, which begin on May 12.
