Dorian Finney-Smith was presented the 2016 Lt. Fred Koss Award on Wednesday. Finney-Smith, who is affectionately called "Doe-Doe" by his teammates and friends, will graduate this spring with a degree in Family, Youth and Community Sciences.
The fifth-year senior from Portsmouth, Va., led the Gators in rebounding the past three seasons and was Florida's leading scorer the last two years. He was selected to the Coaches All-SEC second team the past two seasons and to the SEC third team by the Associated Press this year. He was also named the SEC's Sixth Man of the Year in 2014.Finney-Smith was presented the Lt. Fred Koss Award by Fred's brother, Bill Koss, a UF men's basketball letterwinner from 1962-65 and long-time TV and radio analyst.
This past season, Finney-Smith averaged 14.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. He recorded a team-best eight double-doubles and eight 20-point games. He became the sixth UF player in the last 20 seasons to tally double-doubles in three consecutive games, joining Udonis Haslem, David Lee and Chandler Parsons, all of whom received the Lt. Fred Koss Award.
On Jan. 11, 2014, Doe-Doe also scored 22 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in an 84-82 overtime victory against Arkansas, becoming the only player ever under former coach Billy Donovan to accomplish this feat in a road game.
The Lt. Fred Koss award is presented to a senior men's basketball player who during a four-year career has personified the attributes of leadership, personal character, scholarship and competitive excellence to distinguish himself as a student-athlete at the University of Florida. The award was established in 1974 to honor Lt. Fred Koss, who perished when his F-4 Phantom jet was shot down on July 7, 1972, during the Vietnam War. The award has been presented 36 times over the past 42 years.
