Gators Travel to Historic Penn Relays for Final Pre-Championship Meet
Wednesday, April 27, 2016 | Track and Field
UF's meet and facility record-setting 2004 4x400-meter relay team will be added to The Penn Relays Wall of Fame this weekend
PHILADELPHIA – The University of Florida track and field program will send a small contingent of runners to the 122nd running of The Penn Relays this Thursday (April 28), Friday (April 29), and Saturday (April 30).
Thursday night will see junior Taylor Tubbs compete in the women's 5,000 meters, while Jimmy Clark and Eddie Garcia will run the men's 5,000 meters roughly 40 minutes later. This will be the first 5,000 meters race of the season for all three of them. Clark's top outdoor time in the event (13:58.24) ranks No. 3 in program history, and Tubbs' personal record of 16:27.66 ranks ninth on UF's all-time outdoor top 10.
Friday will feature Ryan Clark running the 100 meters, the second consecutive grouping of Najee Glass, Hugh Graham Jr., Kunle Fasasi, and Arman Hall in the men's 4x400-meter relay preliminaries, and a sprint medley relay crew of Clark, Graham Jr., Fasasi, and Andres Arroyo.
Clark enters the weekend with the No. 13-ranked 100 meters time in Division I, and the Gators' 4x400 relay is coming off the fifth-fastest time in the country this year (3:03.07), which it ran at last Friday's (April 22) Tom Jones Memorial Invitational.
Should UF's 4x400 relay qualify for the final, it will race again on Saturday evening.
The induction of Florida's 2004 4x400 relay team of Sekou Clarke, Reggie Witherspoon, Stefan Pastor, and Kerron Clement, which set The Penn Relays and Franklin Field records with a time of 3:01.10, will be inducted to the meet's Wall of Fame. Saturday's 4x400 relay final is a "Wall of Fame Event in Honor of the 2004 Florida 4x400-Meter Relay."

HEARING OUT (COACH) HOLLOWAY
Florida track and field head coach Mike Holloway on the distance group traveling to The Penn Relays…
"There're always great 5,000s up there, so we're just looking for (Jimmy Clark and Eddie Garcia) to stick their noses in and get a little bit better. Taylor (Tubbs) is going to run her first 5k in about a year. Just based off of what she's done in the 800 (meters) and 1,500 (meters), her fitness is pretty good. We expect some good results out of her.
On what it will be like for this group to be in the unique environment at The Penn Relays…
"It's a very historical event. We're looking forward to going up there and being a part of what's going on. The hype, especially around the United States vs. The World stuff, is crazy. You've got people beating drums … it's a crazy environment. What I'm just looking for them to do is not get caught up in all that, and we have to approach it like a business trip. We're going up there to get something done.
"We're not necessarily trying to run any fantastic times, but we're going to go up there and compete hard. This is our last meet before we get ready for the championship season, so it's important we come out of here with some good results."
