Both now advance to the national ballot. The national team is announced June 9.
Both appear on the district team in their first opportunity, as sophomores and above are eligible for nomination. Academic excellence prevailed on the District IV team, as the lowest GPA among the 10-member team is a 3.95. Six, including both Kuhlman and McMurtry, turned in a 4.0 or better.
Kuhlman has compiled a 13-4 dual match singles record and an 8-2 dual match doubles record for the No. 1-ranked Florida Gators women's tennis team this season. The Gator sophomore clinched three decisive matches over top-25 teams this season, South Carolina, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt, who ended the Gators' 2015 season in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
McMurtry collected six All-America honors in 2016 (vault, beam and all-around in NCAA competition; vault, bars, beam in NACGC regular-season). She used collegiate-best to win the 2016 Southeastern Conference balance beam title and take second in the all-around (39.625). Those finishes placed her on the All-SEC team for the second consecutive season. McMurtry was the only gymnast in nation to score multiple 10.0s on bars in 2016.
McMurtry is pursuing a degree in applied physiology & kinesiology- fitness wellness and Kuhlman is majoring in public relations.
Both earned SEC First Year Academic honors in 2015 and McMurtry appeared on the 2016 Academic All-SEC Winter Honor Roll. As a freshman, Kuhlman appeared on the ITA Scholar-Athlete team and McMurtry earned a spot on the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches (NACGC) Scholastic All-America team.
