Eriksson shares this year's award with Alabama's Daniel Haugh
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – University of Florida hammer thrower Anders Eriksson was named the 2016 Southeastern Conference Men's Outdoor Co-Freshman Field Athlete of the Year, sharing the honor with Alabama's Daniel Haugh, the conference office announced on Wednesday (June 1).
Eriksson joins long jumper Mike Morrison (2004) and combined events athlete and pole vaulter Mike Morrison (2007) as the only other Gators to win the award, which was first bestowed in 2004.
A native of Norrahammar, Jonkoping, Sweden, Eriksson became just the second freshman since 2006, and the third Gator in history to win the SEC hammer throw title. His winning mark of 69.62 meters was the farthest title-winning throw since 2010.
Eriksson's season-best mark of 71.14 meters at the Virginia Challenge, his fourth collegiate meet, is the fourth-best toss by any Division I freshman since 2002. It also broke Jeremy Postin's school record by 16 inches (0.41 meters). Moreover, Eriksson is the eighth SEC thrower, regardless of classification, to 71 meters prior to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
