The pair competed in adjacent lanes in the second semifinal of the men's 200 freestyle. Out of all 16 semifinalists, Dwyer swam the quickest time -- 1:46.66 -- and Lochte placed fifth at 1:47.58. Because both finished among the top eight swimmers, they will move on to the event's finals Tuesday night.
Incoming Gator Maxime Rooney appeared in the 200 freestyle's first semifinal after swimming the 14th-fastest preliminary time of 1:48.57. In the semifinal, Rooney swam 1:47.98, placing ninth overall and just outside the top-eight cutoff. He will serve as the first alternate for Tuesday's finals.
After a scratch in the men's 100 breaststroke Sunday, Caeleb Dressel made his 2016 trials debut also in the 200 free, swimming in the same morning preliminary heat as Dwyer. While Dwyer won Heat 10, Dressel came in ninth at 1:49.93, which stood at 32nd overall.
Sydney Sell actually opened the day for Florida, competing as the lone Gator in the women's 100 backstroke. She placed 92nd, improving six spots on her seed, with a time of 1:03.70.
Next up for the Gators were Brennan Balogh and Harrison Haines in the men's 100 backstroke, each making huge leaps in their initial seeds. Balogh, originally seeded 120th, finished 85th overall with a time of 56.91, shaving almost three seconds off his collegiate-best 59.28. Haines topped his 130 seed with a 104th-place finish and a 57.23 time, almost a second quicker than his collegiate-low 58.13.
The women's 400 freestyle concluded the morning's preliminary events, with Taylor Katz and Kahra Williams also making their 2016 trials debuts. Swimming in the same heat, they finished just a place apart, with Katz at fifth (52nd overall) and Williams at seventh (80th overall). Katz greatly improved her initial seed of 78, swimming a 4:17.56, while Williams swam a 4:21.36.
The trials will continue with Day 3 on Tuesday. It will be a quieter day with only three preliminary events -- women's 200 freestyle, men's 200 butterfly and women's 200 IM.
Each day will begin with preliminary heats at 11 a.m. EST and conclude with event finals and semifinals at 8 p.m. EST. Estimated start times for each preliminary event can be found here, and the event schedule for the entire meet can be found on the USA Swimming website.
Prelims will be broadcast live daily on the NBC Sports app and online and on edited tape-delay on the NBC Sports Network. Event semifinals and finals will air live on NBC and online. The full TV schedule is available here.
