Thursday, June 30, 2016 | Lacrosse
Lacrosse's eight freshmen honorees were the most of any UF sport in 2015-16.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A day after 16 Gators were named to the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll, eight freshmen lacrosse players graced the 2016 SEC First Year Honor Roll, announced Thursday by the league office to bring Florida lacrosse's total to 24 lacrosse student-athletes with academic nods for 2015-16.
Florida's eight freshman recognitions were the most of any sport at the University of Florida, just ahead of seven Gator soccer selections.
Thursday's announcement brings Florida's total of student-athletes named to a 2015-16 SEC Academic Honor Roll to 258. Florida placed 191 on the SEC Academic Honor Rolls (58 on fall list; 48 winter, 94 on spring) and 58 on the First-Year Honor Roll.
UF's 10 seniors were among the 16 named to the Spring Academic Honor Roll Wednesday. While the Gators were diligent in the classroom, they also got it done on the field in 2016. Florida swept both the BIG EAST regular season and tournament slates to win the program's sixth straight conference championship. The Orange and Blue finished the regular season with a .900 win percentage (18-2), second-best in program history, collected four IWLCA All-America honors, seven All-BIG EAST honorees and swept five of the six major BIG EAST postseason awards.
To be recognized to the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll, each student-athlete must 1) have a GPA of 3.00 for either the preceding academic year or have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship, a letterwinner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport's entire NCAA Championship segment.
