Sandra Gal Becomes First Gator Golfer To Compete In Olympics

Gainesville, Fla. - Former University of Florida golfer Sandra Gal has qualified to compete in the 2016 Rio Olympics for Team Germany. Gal is the first current or former Gator golfer compete in the Olympics, as 2016 marks the first Olympic Games in 112 years to include golf. Gator athletes have now competed in 14th different sports in the Olmpics.
Gal is one of 60 female golfers to compete in Rio, and qualified as the top-rated female from Germany. The top-15 world-ranked players are eligible for the Olympics, with a limit of four players from a given country. Beyond the top-15, players will be eligible based on the world rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players among the top-15. At the University of Florida from 2005-07, Gal was named an All-American First Team performer by the National Golf Coaches Association in 2007, and a member of the All-Southeastern Conference First Team in 2007. She ranks third in program history with a single-seaon stroke average of 72.69 set in 2006-07. Her three individual titles are tied for sixth-most in program history.
Competition will span from August 17th-20th, and consists of 72 holes of individual stroke play. Scores are cumulative from round to round with all competitors playing 72 holes. There is no 36-hole cut. The golfer with the lowest aggregate score wins. In the event of a tie for first, second or third place, a play-off or multiple play-offs shall be conducted for the purpose of determining the gold, silver and bronze medal winners.
