Kelly Murphy: Olympic Bronze Medalist

Kelly Murphy won the first Olympic volleyball medal in program history. Team USA defeated the Netherlands, 3-1, in the bronze-medal match Saturday in Rio.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Gator Great Kelly Murphy is 1-for-1 in the Olympic Games, and she'll have a Bronze Medal to boast after Team USA defeated the Netherlands, 3-1, Saturday in the bronze-medal match in Rio to give the Gators their first-ever volleyball Olympic medal.

Murphy's bronze delivered the University of Florida its 10th Olympic Medal this Olympiad and pushed Florida's total to 122 all-time in summer games.

The hot hitter scored seven points towards U.S.A.'s tally – one service ace, five kills and one block. The United States started with a 25-23 first-set win before the Netherlands made it interesting by taking the second 27-25 to even the match. The Americans put the pedal to the medal to close it out the next two and make a podium finish on the final day of action in Rio de Janeiro.

The Americans went 5-0 in pool play and won their quarterfinals match before falling short to Serbia in five in the semifinals. The U.S. capped off the Olympic Games tournament 7-1 with Olympic Bronze Saturday.

Murphy and Gator Great Aury Cruz made history as the first two Florida volleyball indoor Olympians in program history. They're among a staggering 30 University of Florida athletes competing in Rio, the most in the SEC. Cruz and Puerto Rico exited Olympic play after the preliminary round wrapped up Sunday.
