Gators to open season at Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships

Gainesville, Fla. - The University of Florida women's golf team will open up the 2016-2017 season at the 19th Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships on Sep. 12-13, hosted by the University of Tennessee. The Gators have competed at the Mercedes-Benz seven times, and captured both the tournament and individual title in 2007. In 2015, the Gators finished 5th in the team results, and Sam Wagner finished 3rd in the individual competition. The 2016 field features 15 teams, including 3 of the Top-30 teams from last year's final rankings.
Course Information: The tournament is being held at the par-71, 5,897-yard Cherokee Country Club, in Knoxville, Tn.
Format: 54-hole stroke play where teams will play three rounds, 36 holes on Monday and 18 on Tuesday.
Tee Times:
Monday Rd. 1 – 8:30 a.m.
Monday Rd. 2 – Continuous play from Round 1
Tuesday – 9 a.m. Shotgun Start
The Gators' Lineup:
Freshman Marta Perez (Valencia, Spain): Following a notable summer, competing in the European Ladies Amateur Championship and finishing 12th in the Girls British Open Amateur Championship, Perez will tee off for the first time as a Gator.
Junior Taylor Tomlinson (Gainesville, Fla.): Tomlinson was named to the 2016 All-SEC Second Team after claiming her the first two individual titles of her career at the Cougar Classic and the Florida Challenge
Sophomore Sam Wagner (Windermere, Fla.): During a breakout freshman season, Wagner was named to the 2016 All-SEC Freshman Team after competing in the lineup in every tournament. Wagner finished tied for 3rd at the Mercedes-Benz last year.
Senior Kelly Grassel (Chesterton, Indiana): In her junior season, Grassel individually qualified for the 2016 NCAA Championships, where she finished tied for 20th, and she also recorded her first individual tournament title at the Florida Challenge with a T1 finish.
Senior Sydney Needham (Villa Rica, Georgia): At the Alamo Invitational, Needham fired a career-best 217, where she finished tied for sixth in 2016.
Head Coach Emily Glaser Says: "This is always a fun time of the year, the energy is high to tee it up at the first event. We will focus on small goals this week. I am anxious to see how we have improved over the summer and to be able to compare how our games have matured since this event last year. I am also excited for Marta, who will be competing in her first event as a Gator."
