GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The University of Florida men's golf team will head to Glenview, Illinois, Sunday to continue their season at the Windon Memorial Classic. The Gators look to repeat their success in the tournament, as the team took home the title in its only appearance (1995).
Florida will look to build off of the improvement it had at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, where it saw the team finish 43-strokes ahead of last year's result. Sam Horsfield leads the team into the Windon Memorial after starting his season with a top-10 finish (T6).
Course Information: The 2016 Windon Memorial Classic is being held at the par-72, 7,103-yard North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
Tournament Information: The tournament will be a two-day, 54-hole event.
Head Coach J.C. Deacon:
(on going into the Windon Memorial Classic) "We've had a lot of good individual play in the last year and a half and I just want to see the team put it all together and we've been doing a good job in qualifying and the guys have been working hard on their putting and wedges and everything's there for us to play well, we just need to go and do it."
(on playing at North Shore Country Club) "It's a really good course for us and it's going to be a good test of golf. I've heard some great things about it and we're going to be in a northern climate. We're going to Chicago where the National Championship will be hosted in May, so there are a lot of things for us to look for and prepare for the biggest tournament of the year. The grasses are going to be the same and that type of stuff, so it's great preparation for us down the road but we need to focus on this week and play at our best as a team and get the job done."
Tee Times (Rd. 1/Rd. 2):
Lineup:
Sophomore Sam Horsfield (Davenport, Fla.): Horsfield comes into the second tournament of the year as the highest finisher in the team's first outing. Horsfield shot a first-round 65 to lead the field at the Carpet Capital Classic and ended up finishing T6 at eight under.
Sophomore Gordon Neale (Dove Canyon, Calif.): Neale moves up a spot in the Gators' lineup to second after being the team's second-best finisher at the Carpet Capital. All three of Neale's rounds were even or under par in his first tournament.
Sophomore Ryan Celano (Naples, Fla.): Celano gets his first opportunity in the lineup after playing in the Carpet Capital as an individual. He got his season off to a solid start, shooting even par in his first round of the year.
Senior Ryan Orr (Belleair, Fla.): Orr appears in the fourth spot in the lineup for the second tournament in a row. He notched his first eagle of the year en route to a one-under in his second round of the Carpet Captial.
