The former Gators quarterback hits a home run in an Instructional League game.
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- A voice yelled my way as I walked down the hallway after lunch.
"Hey, did you see what Tebow did?"
"No, what?"
"He hit a home run in his first at-bat."
"You serious?"
Zach was serious. And it's true.
The former Heisman winner and Gators quarterback, in his first Instructional League at-bat for the Mets on Wednesday in Port St. Lucie, Fla., drilled the first pitch he saw in his first competitive baseball game since high school over the left-center field wall for a home run.
It's Tebow, so should we be surprised?
Tebow's home run was off Cardinals minor-leaguer John Kilichowski, a 6-foot-5 lefty who was St. Louis' 11th-round pick out of Vanderbilt in June.
Meanwhile, in the video, check out the first player to greet Tebow after he is met at home plate by a teammate. The guy with the bat in the on-deck circle. That is Pete Alonso, the UF first baseman last season who was drafted by the Mets in June and is now a teammate of Tebow's on their Instructional League team.
A moment both former Gators will remember.
