ISLEWORTH, Fla. --
John Axelsen and
Gordon Neale both finished in the top five of the leaderboard as Florida finished second at the Tavistock by one stroke.
The Gators made a late push that almost landed them in a playoff as birdies from from
Chris Nido and Neale on the 16th and another from Neale on 17th put them in position.
The defending champions would fall just one stroke short carding a three round total of 859 (-5) as the Cal Bears claimed the 2017 Tavistock title.
Axelsen and Neale finished in red numbers again on Tuesday. Axelsen's two-under day placed him third (-7) on the leaderboard while Neale (-6) was just one back and finished fourth.
Alejandro Tosti posted his third top 25 finish of the year as he was four-over-par for the week which landed him in a tie for 25th.
Coach's Take
On the final round of play -- "What an exciting way to end the fall. Somehow our guys managed to get in the hunt down the stretch. We had far from our best stuff but, we never quit. That attitude paid off and we were one shot shy of a playoff. Big congrats to the Cal Bears for getting it done."
Going into the offseason -- "We need this offseason to get everyone completely settled and focused on growth. We have an extremely talented team, but we need to dedicate ourselves to patience, hard work and emotional control. Those championship qualities will determine our ceiling." -coachÂ
